Policy priorities

Europe’s food manufacturing technologies industry’s ambition is to enable a food system that is resilient, sustainable and competitive. Our Policy Manifesto articulates this vision and translates it into actionable objectives. It is based on three strategic pillars:

  1. Activate an enabling environment by streamlining regulations, investing in infrastructure, and fostering digital ecosystems.

  2. Advance resource efficiency by promoting decarbonising technologies, water reuse, and waste reduction technologies in food manufacturing.

  3. Accelerate new food sources by scaling bioeconomy solutions and supporting the development of novel foods.

This vision drives FMTE’s policy work, which focuses on several priorities:

Water

Foster the uptake of technologies that increase water efficiency in food manufacturing.

Biotech

Provide an EU framework on food biotech that creates enabling pathways from lab to factory to market so that Europe can scale food biomanufacturing competitively and safely.

Food waste

Support implementation of the EU’s food‑waste reduction agenda by deploying technology solutions (process control, digitalisation, valorisation/upcycling) in manufacturing.

Energy efficiency

Advance policies that accelerate energy‑efficient technologies and decarbonisation in food manufacturing (e.g., heat recovery, electrification, smart controls).

FCM elastomers

Deliver a harmonised EU approach on food-contact materials elastomers.

PFAS

Achieve a proportionate PFAS framework that reduces dependency where alternatives exist while preserving essential uses.
